Couple of meters away from the park were the protests take place, a
Food Not Bombs groups has been giving away food every Saturday for the
last 8 or 9 months. Food Not Bombs has for sure had it's effect of the
walking-by Icelanders, who are getting more curious and interested in
alternative solutions to the problems of capitalism."
ECONOMIC PROTESTS IN ICELAND
With the global economic crisis forcing over 800 million to go without
regular food the all volunteer global movement Food Not Bombs is
responding by providing vegetarian meals to the hungry in more than a
1,000 cities every week. Food Not Bombs groups are also organizing
protests, Really Really Free Markets, Homes Not Jails actions and
planting Food Not Lawns Gardens in communities all over the world.
Nearly ten thousand families loose their homes to foreclosure each week
in the United States and over 20 percent of all American public school
students are homeless. Billions of dollars to bail out banks and fund
wars of terror while millions are homeless and hungry. Yet grassroots
movements like Food Not Bombs are attracting increased popular support
and providing alternatives to the failures of corporate domination.
The Meals Not Missiles Tour is a great way to inspire hope in your
community.
Mr. McHenry helped start Food Not Bombs in 1980. When volunteers were
arrested Amnesty International announced that all Food Not Bombs
volunteers would be "Prisoners of Conscience" if convicted. Rather than
stop our work it inspired a global movement. Food Not Bombs is growing
more today than at any time in our history. Food Not Bombs groups
started "Food Not Lawns" community gardens in over 60 cities last
summer. Last year aboriginal youth started a Food Not Bombs chapter in
Alice Springs, Australia sharing meals at the foot of Ayres Rock in the
Northern Territory. Along with their normal weekly meals, Food Not
Bombs groups have also been providing food and logistics to activists
at protests from Reykjavik, Iceland and Santiago, Chile to Hobart,
Tasmania. Food Not Bombs groups in South Korea have been feeding
striking auto workers, Bangkok Food Not Bombs fed the pro-democracy
protest this summer and Jakarta Food Not Bombs organized a Really
Really Free Market sharing free meals, healthcare, books, clothing and
other useful household items. Russian Food Not Bombs groups are
organizing actions to stop the wave of Neo-Nazi violence and our
volunteers in Israel and Palestine are busy planting olive trees along
with feeding workers and immigrants. The Russian language edition of
Newsweek Magazine ran a feature article about our movement in May.
Volunteers blocked an Israeli air force base trying to stop the bombing
of Gaza. Food Not Bombs is providing vegetarian meals in over 1,000
cites every week and reach thousands with our message of peace, hope
and cooperation. Keith would love to share is experience with you and
your classmates.
Keith spoke at nearly 60 colleges last year and the response was
fantastic. The presentation helped start local Food Not Bombs groups
and attracted new members to student clubs. The presentation will
inspire people from your community to join you in working for peace,
social justice and to protect the environment. With more people then
every contacting our office about the global food crisis, home
foreclosures, the U.S. election and the World Peace Week we have
access to considerable news and information about community organizing
and social change from movements from all over the globe.
Please consider organizing a Food Not Bombs Presentation and inspire
your classmates and community to work for positive social change. We
would love to visit your school this semester and provide an
alternative perspective sure to be inspiring and hopeful. Thanks for
your interest.
